Developing theoretical and practical models of Urban Ecotourism, Nature Tourism and Rural Immersion Expeditions with the objectives of creating sustainable livelihoods and raising environmental awareness. The programme aims at using Ecotourism as a tool for environmental protection and preservation.

Urban Ecotourism, a key project under this programme, is described below.

The Urban Ecotourism Project of Delhi Greens seeks to explore the natural heritage of Delhi and re-connect the citizens to the two life-lines of Delhi, River Yamuna and Delhi Ridge. The objective of this project is to transform citizens as stakeholders of the various life-supporting ecosystems in Delhi that keep them alive.

Delhi is known to be one of the greenest capital cities in the world. It is the greens of Delhi which make the city livable despite so much pollution. Delhi’s tree cover and the green spaces support considerable urban biodiversity, unique to the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.

Delhi has several big and small green patches, in addition to the Ridge and the Yamuna River flowing through it. It also comprises a few protected areas, urban and rural villages, lakes and large number of water bodies.

Yet the ecotourism potential of the city is yet to be fully understood. Add to that the landfills, the resettlement and unauthorized colonies, the drains and the political ecology of urban planning & development and we touch upon all relevant issues needed to make an ideal urban ecotourism trip to the most majestic city of all times!

This has been the motivation behind initiating the Urban Ecotourism Project. The first Delhi Greens Urban Ecotour was flagged off by Dr. B.C. Sabata, Sr. Scientific Officer of the Department of Environment, Government of NCT of Delhi from Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station on 13 September, 2008.

Since then, Delhi Greens has conducted several Urban Ecotours for individuals, schools, colleges, corporate houses and RWAs. The objective of the project is to raise awareness and sensitization in the people about Nature and and natural resources by connecting them with the life-supporting ecosystems in Delhi.
