Delhi
Greens gave the city of Delhi its very first green blog! Ever since its
inception in 2007, the Delhi Greens Blog
has been promoting green events and activities taking place in the city
and
ensuring extensive participation of the citizens. The Blog uses all
forms of
New & Social Media to reach out to the masses while reporting
environmental
news, views and happenings from across Delhi..
The
first ever Delhi
Youth Summit on Climate
was hosted by Delhi Greens at the residence of the first Prime Minister
of
India at Teen Murti House. Supported by the Dept. of Environment, GNCT
and a
series of other organisations, the summit brought together students and
young
professionals from all walks of life to share, discuss and build
consensus on
the various environmental challenges faced by the city, especially in
the wake
of a changing climate. Its outcome was a Delhi Youth Charter on climate
change.
Delhi
Greens also engaged the citizens of Delhi in a public.art.ecology
festival
themed on global warming and entitled 48°C,
the highest recorded summer temperature from the city. The festival was
an
experimental setup to explore the urban ecology of Delhi through the
medium of
public art. Delhi Greens wove a green outreach plan around the various
art
pieces installed in public spaces in the city.
To
develop a sense of ownership in the people residing in the National
Capital,
Delhi Greens has introduced an innovative concept of ‘Urban’
Ecotourism.
The objective of these bus-tours is to convert
people into responsible citizens by showing them the existing and
depleting
natural heritage of Delhi which supports and sustains them. It is also
a
platform to promote Delhi’s environmental history, green
spaces and innovative
solutions to contemporary issues and problems.
A
‘Save
Tiger Save Humanity’ Rally
was
coordinated by Delhi Greens in the month of July 2009 in the lawns of
the Teen
Murti House. The rally was part of the 5th
Bengal Tiger Consultation
and saw participation from renowned conservationists and government
representatives including the Environment Minister himself.
In
addition, Delhi Greens has played an instrumental role in motivating
the youth
in schools and colleges, corporate houses and government agencies by
delivering
talks, presentations and hosting eco-meets. During the media onslaught
on the
Bus Rapid Transit, Delhi Greens carried out an extensive survey to
highlight the
real problem of BRT implementation. Promoting other modes of mass
transport,
including cycles, has also been our central agenda. The Global Day of
Climate
Action was organized by Delhi Greens simultaneously in Delhi and
Imphal. The Save
Loktak Lake Campaign also saw full support from Delhi Greens.
As
part
of the ‘Climate Challenge Initiative’, Delhi Greens
was the first organisation
to respond to the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). Delhi
Greens
is also the official nominator organisation of the Sierra Club
Livelihoods
Awards for Indian NGOs. Delhi Greens has been active in supporting
campaigns
such for the Yamuna, against the introduction of Bt Brinjal,
anti-nuclear
protests, for saving trees, forests and tigers.
